Feeling a little husky!

Hobart Public Art | Husky Memorial by Dan Tucker

Dan Tucker

Welcome to Hobart and it's replica of a Mawsons Hut. The huts were constructed in 1912 in Antarctica and this particular replica is what the first Australian expedition, led by Douglas Mawson, occupied during their three year study in the cold Antarctic.

The sculpture is a tribute to the sled dogs that were instrumental in the researchers lives as transport was limited and most animals would not have survived the conditions.

A team of fifty Huskies were taken to Antarctica to assist the Australian Antarctica Expedition and depicted are the pack leader; Basilisk with his companion Alexandra. Both dogs perished to a fall down a crevice along with four other Huskies and their human companion; Ninnis
