Sydney Public Art by Timothy Schmalz

Timothy Schmalz

Timothy Schmalz, a Catholic artist, once crossed paths with a homeless person wrapped in a blanket and thought up a brilliant idea.

He set to work recreating the image calling the work 'Homeless Jesus' in an effort to humanize homeless people. He felt by obscuring the face and hands the viewer could imagine any person being wrapped in that blanket, cold, hungry and alone... even Jesus.

Today it's become a bit of a phenomena around the world as philanthropists, churches and other religious institutions buy replica's of Timothy's work to install at their own sites.

Today, Australia has three such copies.

  • St James' Church, Sydney
  • Newman College, Melbourne &
  • Sacred Heart Cathedral, Townsville
This sculpture is found at the St James Church in Sydney.
