Melbourne CBD - Deborah Halpern

Mali sculpture in Birrarung Marr by Deborah Halpern

In 2010 The Melbourne Zoo successfully bred its first baby elephant to which they named Mali.
in 2011 they began a campaign to celebrate the zoo's 150th anniversary by inviting sponsors and artists to participate in a 2012 sculpture program consisting of 50 Mali sculptures all painted to reflect their sponsors.

This Mali was painted by Deborah Halpern. Deborah's unmistakable sculptures are easily identified in Melbourne and are typically the kind of sculpture you've seen but may not have particularly noticed.

This Mali was purchased and placed on public display in Birrarung Marr near the children's playground.
