Latrobe | Big Platypus

Fact: When first examined in 1799 the scientist declared the body a fake believing someone had sewn several animals together

BIG Platypus

Latrobe is platypus capital of the world which doesn't mean a great deal since the platypus are only native to Australasia.

I always knock on sculptures when I visit to gauge what they're made of and don't recall doing it for the Platypus. I assumed it was fiberglass though and really surprised to learn today that it's actualy made of wood and was carved and chiseled to shape.

The facility next door is the Axemans Hall of Fame where chainsaw carving events occur so I'm not surprised by the notion of it being wood or that it was carved by an enthusiastic member of the  neighboring facility, but quite simply, it didn't look like wood.
