BIG Matchstick

This beauty titled 'Almost Once' was created by Brett Whiteley and his assistant Matthew Dillion in 1991 and gifted to the Art Gallery of NSW the same year.

The sculpture was repaired in 1995 by Matthew Dillon, Anne Cummings in 2002 and repaired in both 2007 and 2017 due to damages caused by both termites and cockatoos.

'Almost Once' is 8 meters tall and constructed using Blackbutt timber with one match having been burnt to effect and the other being constructed of polystyrene and fiberglass.

The Brett Whitely Studio Museum located in Surry Hills hosts a mini pair of matchsticks at the entrance to welcome and regale all visitors of Mr Whiteleys most iconic public work
